- 3.3.7 - Compare the cultural characteristics of their community within communities in other parts of the world.
Objective:
- After listening to Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin and participating in the bulletin board activities, students will be able to list differences between American and Mexican cultural characteristics.
Description:
- Students will listen to/watch the YouTube video of Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin
- Students will view the bulletin board
- Students will complete a fill in the blank activity. They will take a slip of paper from the envelope on the board and complete the sentence that states, "Every morning I _________ to school." This is an excerpt from the read aloud book.
- After writing on the slip, students will submit their answer in a mailbox, or any other method the teacher uses to collect the slips.
- Optional Response Activity: Write a letter to a penpal.
Materials:
- Read aloud video and book
- Brown background paper
- USA and Mexico sign on blue paper (on the wall)
- 2 paper plane die cut punch outs
- "Dear Primo" sign on white paper
- Two large sheets of white paper designed to look like notebook paper
- 1 sheet says, "Every morning I _____ to school."
- 1 sheet says, "Every morning I ride my bicicleta to school."
- 4 decorative compass rose printouts and paper for corner borders
- 1 large cutout of the USA

- maps glued on top of the cardboard
- 1 large cutout of Mexico
- cardboard
- maps glued on top of the cardboard
- 4 signs:
- Read and Complete the Sentence
- Place Slip in the Mailbox
- QR Code Inside
- Open to Read
- 2 envelopes
- Place the signs "QR Code Inside" and "Open to Read" on one of the envelopes
- Place the sign "Place Slip in the Mailbox" on one of the envelopes
- One-half styrofoam sphere decorated with tissue paper and mod podge to look like a globe
- 2 hangers (or wire)
- One hanger goes from the USA cardboard cutout to the globe
- One hanger goes from the globe to Mexico cardboard cutout
- 1 binder clip to attach "QR Code Inside" and "Open to Read" envelope to the hanger/wire
- 1 blank paper slip for each student in your class to complete the activity
- Hot glue and staples to attach everything to the bulletin board
- Markers, pencils, tape, and scissors
